You see it in the comment section over on the FP constantly. NASCAR sucks. The racing is boring and the commentators are terrible. Darrell Waltrip is widely regarded as one of the worst color commentators in sports. Boogity Boogity Boogity is a laughing stock and point of contention for anyone who doesn’t watch NASCAR on a regular basis.

However,

The guys in the FOX booth, Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip, and Larry McReynolds have been together for 16 years now (yes they added Jeff Gordon last year). That has to be one of the longer running broadcast teams out there. And GD can they call a race.

Waltrip, when on his game, can lay out what is going to happen before it happens. The Atlanta finish with Edwards/Johnson, the Atlanta finish with Harvick/Gordon, the Darlington finish with Busch/Craven are all good examples. All three are excellent at conveying genuine excitement in the moment or breaking it all down depending on the situation.

Tip of the cap as well to the FOX production staff. They always have the best shots, the right shots, and mix in things like team audio and in-car cameras seamlessly. NASCAR is in an incredibly difficult sport to put on TV and they make it look easy.

Also, Watching this 20 minute video reminded me what the sport is/was. Those drivers and cars can put on a show no matter how screwed up the cars, points, ratings, tracks, and leadership are. Which is why I’ll still turn on the TV and watch when I have the time.
